Shaykh Bali says — this is an illness, and it has four treatments. Each one can be started at home.

Recognize the Signs

The Qur'an reaches your ears, but no khushu' descends within. You listen to dhikr, yet nothing stirs in your heart.

You stand for salah, but from beginning to end your mind is somewhere else. After the salam, you cannot remember what you recited.

The Shaykh says — these are signs of one and the same thing: the heart has become hard.

He gives an example — a heart that has abandoned dhikr is like one that is dead; even if you shake it, it does not move. But the one who does dhikr is alive.

The Shaykh's Answer — Four Treatments

To revive a dead heart, you must give it water through dhikr and obedience.

The four: one, abundant dhikr — with the tongue and in the heart; even if your mind is distracted, do not deprive yourself of the reward of moving your tongue. Two, tahajjud. Three, recitation of the Qur'an. Four, abundant salawat upon the Prophet.

The Shaykh mentioned a narration about the building of a house in Paradise and himself said that it is weak — so it should be seen only as encouragement, not as evidence.

Evidence — the Qur'an itself is a shifa (healing) for the heart

And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. (Surah Al-Israa 17:82 — Saheeh International)

The Prophet ﷺ said — The example of one who performs dhikr of his Lord and one who does not is like that of the living and the dead. (Sahih Bukhari 6407)

What to Do

  1. Build up dhikr in the gaps of your day — five minutes here, ten there.
  2. In the last third of the night, stand in prayer, even if only briefly — make dua, and keep asking.
  3. Fix a set time for Qur'an recitation every day.
  4. Increase your salawat upon the Prophet — especially in moments when you feel lazy and heavy.
