Shaykh Bali has broken down the three pillars of muhasabah — a condition in the morning, vigilance throughout the day, and accounting at night.

How the Scene Unfolds

A businessman reconciles his accounts every day. The moment he sees a loss, he deals with it right away.

Another opens his accounts only every two or three months. By then, what has been lost cannot be brought back.

The record of our deeds is just the same. Some reconcile it every day, some never do — and then one day it suddenly strikes us: where did all those years go?

The Shaykh says that whoever does not take account of himself thinks he has simply been left alone for no reason.

The Shaykh's Answer — Three Pillars

Muhasabah has three parts — before the deed, during the deed, after the deed.

The first is musharatah: after Fajr, setting a condition with yourself — telling your eyes that today they will stay lowered all day; telling your tongue that today it will stay guarded; and the same for your ears and your heart.

The middle one is muraqabah — keeping watch throughout the day, and bringing yourself back whenever you are about to break the condition. The last is reconciling your account before sleeping, making istighfar, and renewing your resolve again for tomorrow.

Evidence — Take Account Before You Are Taken to Account

حَاسِبُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُحَاسَبُوا، وَزِنُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُوزَنَ عَلَيْكُمْ

Take account of yourselves before you are taken to account, and weigh your deeds yourselves before they are weighed for you. (A well-known saying of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him)

In the Qur'an too, Allah says — O believers, fear Allah; let every soul look to what it has sent forward for tomorrow. (Surah Al-Hashr, verse 18)

What to Do

  1. After Fajr, decide the condition for the day — the eyes, the tongue, the ears, the heart.
  2. Every time during the day that you are about to break the condition, come back and make istighfar.
  3. Before sleeping, reconcile the account of the five prayers — where did you fall short?
  4. Pray any missed prayer before sleep comes, and make a promise to do better tomorrow.
