A man came to Shaykh Bali with exactly this problem. The Shaykh taught him one sentence — and with it the claimant's mask fell off.

How the Incident Happened

A man came to the Shaykh to ask for advice. He had been told that there is a huge hidden treasure beneath his house.

The claimant said — "I won't take any money, just bring me some bakhur"; and the price of that bakhur is thousands upon thousands of taka.

He also said that there are tons and tons of gold below. Yet the price of the gentleman's entire house is trivial compared to that.

The Shaykh said — This is false and fabricated. And I will tell you a way to catch the lie.

The Shaykh's Reply

The Shaykh taught him one sentence — "I am selling you this house at a high price; whatever gold you dig up, it is all yours."

If there really were tons and tons of gold below, the man should have jumped at it — he would make an enormous profit, and the homeowner would get a higher price too. But the claimant said, "I don't buy houses and such." With this, the lie was caught.

The Evidence — Who Is It That Threatens You with Poverty

Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allāh promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:268 — Saheeh International)

The trick with bakhur is like this — a name is mentioned that cannot be found in any shop; in the end, "you will get it from so-and-so" is said, and you are sent to his own man. An item of little value for thousands upon thousands of taka, with the profit shared.

What to Do

  1. Stop the moment money is asked for — whether it comes as bakhur, an amulet, or "expenses", whatever the name.
  2. Tell the claimant that you will sell the house itself to him — if it is true, he will buy it.
  3. Do not allow any digging; and inform everyone in the family beforehand.
  4. Do not curse anyone by name — the task is to protect your own wealth through halal means.
