Ruqyah

Purity Is Half of Faith

Salah is light, sadaqah is proof, patience is illumination, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you — all of it in a single hadith.

Salah is light, sadaqah is proof, patience is illumination, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you — all of it in a single hadith.

Understanding Line by Line

Purity does not mean only wudu and bathing — it also includes keeping the heart clean of whatever Allah dislikes. The scholars say, whoever stays in a state of wudu has strong faith.

"Alhamdulillah" fills the scale. The Shaykh says, so let this word stay on your tongue — again and again, all day long.

Salah is light — light in the grave, light on the Day of Gathering, light on the Sirat. Sadaqah is proof — evidence that your faith is true.

And patience? It is illumination — when the whole world looks dark in hardship, it is by the light of patience that you can see the relief far ahead.

The Shaykh's Words

The heaviest line comes at the end — the Qur'an is either an argument for you, or an argument against you.

You read the verse about lowering the gaze and lowered your gaze — the Qur'an is in your favor. You read the verse about usury and gave up usury — in your favor. But if you read and still do not put it into amal (practice), that very Qur'an will stand against you.

The Evidence — the Beginning of the Hadith

الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلَأُ الْمِيزَانَ

Purity is half of faith, and "Alhamdulillah" fills the scale. (Sahih Muslim 223)

The rest of the same hadith — SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah fill the space between the heavens and the earth; salah is light, sadaqah is proof, patience is illumination, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you.

What to Do

  1. Whenever your wudu breaks, make wudu again — this very habit is a sign of faith.
  2. Keep Alhamdulillah and SubhanAllah on your tongue all day long.
  3. Pray the five prayers on time, and pay attention to khushu — this is your light.
  4. Bring the very verse (ayah) you recited down into one action — let the Qur'an be for you.
