The Three Things the Shaykh Himself Gave Up

Shaykh Bali himself turned back from three well-known ruqyah practices — yet he did not condemn those who do them. This is exactly where the etiquette lies.

Shaykh Bali himself turned back from three well-known ruqyah practices — yet he did not condemn those who do them. This is exactly where the etiquette lies.

How the Question Comes

The question was put directly — in the chapter on ruqyah, which matters have you retracted from? Is reciting over water one of them?

Because all of this has become normal all around us — reciting verses a fixed number of times, long interrogations of the jinn, bottle after bottle of recited-over water.

People give time and money for these things; then, worn out, they wonder — why is nothing working in my case?

In reply, the Shaykh named three things that he himself has given up.

The Shaykh's Reply

Three — repeating verses a fixed number of times, long conversation with the jinn, and reciting over water.

His reason regarding reciting over water is clear — it is not established from the Prophet ﷺ, and he does not know of any Companion having done it. And as for speaking with the jinn, it should not go beyond what is needed; only as much as is necessary.

The Evidence — The Measure of Deeds

مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَدٌّ

Whoever performs an amal (practice) for which we have given no instruction, it is rejected. (Sahih Muslim 1718)

Even so, notice the Shaykh's etiquette — scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah and Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on them, spoke about reciting over water; so I do not do it, but I do not condemn those who do.

What to Do

  1. “This 50 times, that 20 times” — let go of this counting; reciting with full attention is what matters.
  2. No interrogating the jinn — only as much as needed, and no more.
  3. Perform your own ruqyah yourself; the Shaykh himself stopped seeing patients more than 25 years ago.
  4. Do not blame anyone in matters of difference of opinion — hold on to this etiquette.
