If the patient feels pain, it is not the jinn

How does a raqi know whether the blow is landing on the jinn or on the patient? Shaykh Bali's answer gives a simple yardstick — and before it, a word of caution.
The scene
The patient is lying down, and the recitation is going on. Suddenly the body shakes, and just then someone says — Strike it, that is the jinn, it is the one feeling the pain.
The patient keeps groaning. The family thinks treatment is taking place. Back home, marks are seen on the body, and a new fear in the mind.
Then one person after another keeps saying — You have a jinn, you have an asar. As these words pile up, the person breaks down even more.
So the question is simple — how will the raqi know whose body the blow is landing on?
The Shaykh's answer
If the patient feels the blow, then it must be understood that it is the person himself — not the jinn.
The Shaykh says that one should not resort to beating without need. Recitation of the Qur'an can be harder on the jinn than beating — especially the verses (ayahs) about punishment, fire, wrongdoing and the end of the wrongdoers.
Evidence — where gentleness is found
إِنَّ الرِّفْقَ لَا يَكُونُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلَّا زَانَهُ، وَلَا يُنْزَعُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا شَانَهُ
Indeed, gentleness does not exist in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it makes it ugly. (Sahih Muslim 2594)
The Shaykh's caution — it is not a jinn just because someone says "I am such-and-such jinn"; the subconscious mind also speaks. It takes experience to tell a touch from a mental state.
What to do
- No beating without need — recitation alone may be enough at first.
- If it is absolutely necessary, only lightly on the hands and feet, and even then only when the patient is fully unconscious.
- If the patient feels pain, it means the blow is on his body — stop immediately.
- Do not go around telling anyone "You have an asar" — those very words increase suffering.
