Doing Ruqyah Does Not Require Special Power

Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali's answer — anyone can do it. But there are a few conditions, and if they are not followed, the treatment itself departs from the path of the Prophet ﷺ.

Shaykh Wahid Abdussalam Bali's answer — anyone can do it. But there are a few conditions, and if they are not followed, the treatment itself departs from the path of the Prophet ﷺ.

How the Question Comes

The questioner said — I have read some books on ruqyah. Can I now perform ruqyah on my own family, or on someone outside the family? Are there any separate conditions for the raqi?

The fear comes from an idea — that being a raqi supposedly requires some special power. So people end up going from door to door for years, with the sick person of the house.

Alongside this, another thing catches the eye — reciting over oil, over cream, over cooking or salad, and incense smoke. It is said that this is treatment with the Qur'an.

Shaykh Bali's answer came in two parts — first the permission, then the limits.

The Shaykh's Answer

Anyone can perform ruqyah — the Prophet ﷺ said, Whoever among you is able to benefit his brother, let him do so.

But not without conditions — one must first learn how to perform ruqyah; no ruqyah on a woman without a mahram; no touching during ruqyah; no seeking the help of jinn in treatment; and one must not go beyond the path shown by the Prophet ﷺ.

The Evidence — How the Prophet ﷺ Taught

Place your hand on the part of your body where you feel pain, say “Bismillah” three times, and say seven times: “A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir”. (Sahih Muslim 2202)

Calling recitation over oil, cream, cooking, salad or incense Qur'anic treatment — none of this is established from the Prophet ﷺ. He would either recite over the patient himself, or tell the patient to recite over themselves.

What to Do

  1. First learn — what to recite, how to recite, and where to pause.
  2. No ruqyah on a woman without a mahram; and no touching during ruqyah either.
  3. Seeking the help of jinn is not acceptable under any circumstances — it is not treatment, it is a danger.
  4. Either recite over the patient yourself, or tell the patient to recite over themselves — this is the Sunnah.
