Why Can't I Focus in Prayer?
Shaykh Bali's answer is surprising — the work of focus does not begin inside the salah; it begins from the moment you hear the adhan.

Shaykh Bali's answer is surprising — the work of focus does not begin inside the salah; it begins from the moment you hear the adhan.
How the Question Comes
The question came directly — many of us cannot keep our minds in salah; what is the cure for this?
- Right after saying the takbir, the day's accounts rush into my head
- I can't remember which rak'ah I am in
- I recite Al-Fatihah, but I don't realize what I have recited
- After the salam I wonder — was my salah even valid?
The Shaykh did not give just one single remedy. Like a staircase, he showed the whole path step by step — from the adhan to the final salam.
The Shaykh's Answer
When you hear the adhan, pause and respond; at the time of wudu, think — I am washing the outside, and I am also washing the inside clean of sins.
On the way to the mosque, think that every step is taking you toward the house of the King. When you take off your shoes, leave the world outside as well.
Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked, how do you pray? He said — "The moment I say 'Allahu Akbar', I throw the whole world behind my back."
Evidence — The Closest Moment
أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ، فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ
A servant is closest to his Lord when he is in sujud; so make plenty of dua there. (Sahih Muslim 482)
The Shaykh says — before going into sujud, prepare your heart; present all your requests right there. Shifa, provision, relief from worry — everything is in His hands alone.
What to Do
- Respond to the adhan, think during wudu that your sins are being washed away, and leave the world behind along with your shoes.
- Listen with understanding to Al-Fatihah and the recitation; bow humbly in ruku.
- Ask in sujud with a prepared heart; between the two sujuds say "Rabbighfir li".
- After the salah, make istighfar — for your mind drifting away, and for your shortcomings.
