The Prophet ﷺ told of a man whose sins were so many that he had reached the edge of Hellfire — one habit saved him.

Picture the Scene

Shaykh Bali says the man was a wealthy merchant of an earlier era. People used to take goods from him on instalments.

From the one who could pay, he would take payment. And if someone fell into hardship, he would say to his employee — Let it go; perhaps Allah will let us go too.

The Shaykh says that if someone did this today, people would laugh — they would say he is being cheated. But in reality he was the wisest of them all.

Because he was looking toward something greater and more lasting.

The Shaykh's Answer

He went to meet Allah, and Allah said — “You used to let My servants off; I am more deserving of that.” Then he was granted Paradise.

The Shaykh says this one quality proves three things — the man was detached from this world, he wished good for other Muslims, and he did the deed for Allah's pleasure, not for people's praise.

Evidence — Generosity in Buying and Selling

رَحِمَ اللَّهُ رَجُلًا سَمْحًا إِذَا بَاعَ، وَإِذَا اشْتَرَى، وَإِذَا اقْتَضَى

May Allah have mercy on the person who is generous when selling, when buying, and when asking for what is owed. (Sahih Bukhari 2076)

The Prophet ﷺ said — Whoever relieves a believer of a hardship of this world, Allah will relieve him of a hardship of the Day of Resurrection. (Sahih Muslim 2699)

What to Do

  1. When asking for what is owed, do not be harsh — make it easy, give time.
  2. If the debtor is truly in hardship, give relief, and if you can, forgive the debt.
  3. In buying and selling, give a little extra — there is no need to count down to the last penny.
  4. Keep the deed for Allah's pleasure, not for gathering praise.
