Dua Never Goes to Waste

Shaykh Bali says — the response can come in three ways. Even for what has not yet reached your hands, one thing has already been done.

Shaykh Bali says — the response can come in three ways. Even for what has not yet reached your hands, one thing has already been done.

How the Question Arises

You raise your hands and ask, the water of your eyes falls, and still your situation stays just as it was. A weariness builds up inside — does my dua not even reach?

Shaykh Bali first removes the misconception — dua is itself an act of worship. Within it are a broken heart and making yourself small before Allah.

Then he recites the hadith that is the whole answer to this question.

Along with it, he mentions the etiquette of dua and the times when it is accepted — which many people do not know.

The Shaykh's Answer

When a Muslim makes a dua that contains no sin and no severing of family ties, Allah will surely give him one of three things.

Either He grants what he asked for in this world, or He stores it for him for the Hereafter, or He removes from him an equivalent harm. (Bukhari's Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, with a sound chain)

The Shaykh says — so even if someone becomes tired of asking, they should understand that a harm equal to what they asked for may have been removed from them.

Evidence — Call upon Me, I will respond

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible. (Surah Ghafir 40:60 — Saheeh International)

The times the Shaykh mentioned — between the adhan and the iqamah, in the last third of the night; and the dua of the fasting person, the traveller, and a father for his child.

What to Do

  1. At the beginning of your dua, praise Allah and send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, and do the same at the end.
  2. Raise both hands; ask with certainty — not a dua from a heedless heart.
  3. Make the same dua three times — Allah loves the persistent one who asks.
  4. Do not curse your child in a fit of anger — that too may be accepted.
