Intention Is in the Heart, Not on the Tongue

Shaykh Bali points out that Shaytan does not stop the deed — he wants the deed to move from the book of the hidden to the book of the open.

Shaykh Bali points out that Shaytan does not stop the deed — he wants the deed to move from the book of the hidden to the book of the open.

A Familiar Scene

A plaque on the mosque wall — "Built with the funding of so-and-so." The Shaykh says this calls toward pride.

Going for Umrah and taking a photo of every moment — in front of the Kaaba, at Arafah, along the way; with the message "I am here now." The Shaykh says this too pulls toward showing off.

Praying tahajjud at night and then saying in the morning — "Yesterday I recited ten juz." Giving secret sadaqah and then telling about it afterwards.

The Shaykh says gently — whether or not these things happen, Shaytan only wants to reduce your reward.

The Shaykh's Reply

The place of intention is the heart, not the tongue. "Nawaytul wudu," "Nawaytus salah" — there is nothing to say aloud.

Intention means purpose. If your purpose while doing a deed is Allah's pleasure, you are one who has made the intention. But if the purpose is to show people — that is riya, which is haram.

The Shaykh says that even if it does not reach the level of riya, once a deed is publicized it leaves the book of the hidden and goes to the book of the open — and the reward of the book of the hidden is far greater.

The Evidence — Those Who Will Have the Shade of the Throne

وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأَخْفَاهَا حَتَّى لَا تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُهُ مَا تُنْفِقُ يَمِينُهُ

And the person who gives sadaqah so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has spent. (Sahih Bukhari 660, Sahih Muslim 1031)

On the Day when there will be no shade but His, Allah will place seven kinds of people in His shade — the one who gives in secret is one of them.

What to Do

  1. Stop pronouncing the intention aloud — settle your purpose in the heart before the deed.
  2. If you give charity, give in secret; when the urge to tell arises, stay silent.
  3. Do not have a plaque with your name put up at a mosque or institution.
  4. Do not spread updates about Hajj, Umrah or night worship — that is between you and Allah.
