Is Milad the path the Prophet taught?

Shaykh Bali gave just one yardstick — the default ruling in acts of worship is to hold back, until evidence comes. Once you hold to this rule, no doubt remains.

Shaykh Bali gave just one yardstick — the default ruling in acts of worship is to hold back, until evidence comes. Once you hold to this rule, no doubt remains.

How the question comes

When the day arrives, the arrangements begin — a seerah talk, food prepared, a gathering at the mosque.

All of these are good deeds; so people think, what is there to object to in this?

Some say this is bid'ah, others say the scholars differ on it. Ordinary people find no direction.

The question came to Shaykh Bali in just this way — Does this fall under forbidden bid'ah?

The Shaykh's answer

The default ruling in acts of worship is to hold back, until evidence comes; while in dealings, the default ruling is permissibility.

Apply this yardstick to Milad: Did the Prophet ﷺ do this? No. Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali (may Allah be pleased with them)? No. It did not exist in the Umayyad era either — later the Fatimids introduced it in Egypt. Although Salahuddin Ayyubi (may Allah have mercy on him) brought their rule to an end, some of the customs remained.

The Companions loved the Prophet ﷺ more than we do — when they themselves did not do it, then it is not part of love for him. He said there is no door of good that he did not show to his Ummah.

The evidence — how he himself used to remember the day

When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday, he said — On this day I was born, and on this day I was sent as a prophet. (Sahih Muslim)

He remembered his own birthday by fasting every week — not with a once-a-year event. Deeds are presented on Monday and Thursday, so fasting on these two days is mustahabb.

What to do

  1. Express your love for the Prophet by following the Sunnah — by fasting on Monday.
  2. Read and share the seerah throughout the year, without limiting it to a single day.
  3. Before any act of worship, check — whether the Prophet ﷺ or the Rightly Guided Caliphs did it or not.
  4. Speak gently with those who do it, and do not quarrel.
