Shaykh Bali says: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) lifted the argument up from the earth and carried it to the heavens — and the ruler stopped right there.

The Scene as It Was

During the famine, food was available only in the royal storehouse. Whoever went to take some, the ruler would ask him: Who is your Lord? If the answer pleased him, he gave food; otherwise, deprivation.

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) went. The question came: Who is your Lord? He said, My Lord is Allah.

The ruler flared up: Do you have another lord besides me? Shaykh Bali says Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned this very moment into an opportunity — an opportunity to proclaim tawhid in public.

He said, My Lord is the One who gives life and gives death. The ruler laughed and had two prisoners brought; he released one and killed the other — 'I too give life and death.'

The Shaykh's Explanation

Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not prolong the argument — he said, Allah brings the sun from the east; you bring it from the west.

From this, Shaykh Bali draws a principle of debate — if you have many proofs and your opponent clings to a twisted argument on one of them, do not hang on to it; move on to the next proof.

The ruler was stunned and could give no answer. The incident is mentioned in verse 258 of Surah Al-Baqarah.

The Proof — In Whose Hand Is the Kingdom

Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent - (Surah Al-Mulk 67:1 — Saheeh International)

The ruler gave no food. On the way back, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) filled a sack with soil; when he reached home, food was found there. The Shaykh says — Whoever takes Allah alone as sufficient, Allah becomes sufficient for him.

What to Do

  1. Speak the truth even before the powerful — fear is fitting only for Allah.
  2. If you get stuck in an argument, change the proof, change the topic — do not shout.
  3. Do not compromise in the religion out of fear for your provision; the Owner of provision is One alone.
  4. However great arrogance may be, one small creation of Allah is enough to break it.
