Art of learning

Flipping flashcards, running Anki — and still the results won't budge?

The fault is not in your perseverance. Once you know the explanation, a lot of things will fall into place.

Active recall and spaced repetition are truly evidence-based. Those who use them do better than those who don't. This is completely true.

But there is no strong evidence in research that those who are already doing well do even better by cycling through even more flashcards.

Your room is so messy that finding a single sock takes 30 minutes. Tidy up for an hour and it drops to 30 seconds — a huge gain.

Now spend another three or four hours making the room absolutely perfect — finding the sock will get faster by 5 seconds at most.

By reviewing flashcards, you are practicing retrieval (recalling). But how deeply the information was embedded the first time — that is called encoding.

Weak encoding means the brain keeps wanting to forget, while you keep forcing information in again and again. Three to five times the effort, monotonous and exhausting.

How to embed it deeply the very first time, which technique will work for you, and how to diagnose your own real obstacle — step by step.
