ruqyah
Should I go to a raqi, or recite for myself?
Some say, "Find a good raqi," others say, "Recite for yourself." Shaykh Bali's answer: it is better to perform ruqyah for yourself; however, there is no harm in going to someone else.

Some say, "Find a good raqi," others say, "Recite for yourself." Shaykh Bali's answer: it is better to perform ruqyah for yourself; however, there is no harm in going to someone else.
How the question comes
A thought keeps circling inside your head. It ruins your sleep, doesn't let your mind settle in salah (prayer), and pulls at you in the middle of your work.
One person says, "Find a good raqi, book an appointment." Another says, "Don't go to anyone, just recite for yourself."
In the middle, the person keeps wavering. Time passes, money goes, and the pain inside stays just as it was.
So the question is just one: which is better?
The Shaykh's answer
The better way is for a person to perform ruqyah for himself — and not asking others to perform ruqyah is the preferable course.
Ruqyah is not difficult at all — the Mu'awwidhat a few times, Surah Al-Fatihah a few times, Ayat al-Kursi a few times; morning and evening. Continue for two to three weeks, until Allah grants shifa (healing).
The evidence — those who enter Paradise without reckoning
هُمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَسْتَرْقُونَ وَلَا يَتَطَيَّرُونَ وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ
They are the people who do not ask (others) for ruqyah, do not believe in bad omens, and rely upon their Lord alone. (Sahih Bukhari 5705, Sahih Muslim 218)
This does not mean that going to a raqi is forbidden — the Prophet ﷺ himself performed ruqyah for the Companions, and ruqyah was also performed upon him. This statement concerns a high level of tawakkul; if there is a need, by all means take help.
What to do
- Recite for yourself morning and evening — Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi and the Mu'awwidhat a few times.
- Continue for two to three weeks — do not give up after a day or two.
- When a distressing thought comes, return to dhikr; do not let your mind settle on that thought.
- If needed, take the help of a raqi — but your reliance is on Allah alone.

Breaking Sihr Is Not That Difficult
The question came to Sheikh Wahid Abdussalam Bali from a weary husband. The answer is so simple that many people at first do not even want to believe it.
What to Do Yourself When Struck by the Evil Eye
Here Shaykh Bali has set out two separate steps — one is treatment, the other is protection. It is by mixing these two up that people grow weary year after year.
Who is really taking the blows?
Shaykh Bali's answer is as much for the patient's family as it is for raqis — one should not resort to beating without need.
