Who is really taking the blows?
Shaykh Bali's answer is as much for the patient's family as it is for raqis — one should not resort to beating without need.

Shaykh Bali's answer is as much for the patient's family as it is for raqis — one should not resort to beating without need.
How the question comes up
The patient is lying down in the clinic, and recitation is going on. Suddenly the body trembles, and right then someone calls out — hit it, that is the jinn, it is the one feeling the pain.
The patient keeps groaning. The family thinks treatment is taking place. Back home, marks are seen on the body, and a new fear sits in the heart.
Then one person after another keeps saying — You have a jinn, you are possessed. As these words pile up, the person breaks down even more.
So the question is simple — how will the raqi know whether the blow is landing on the jinn or on the patient?
The Shaykh's answer
If the patient feels the blow, then you must understand that it is the person himself — not the jinn.
The Shaykh says that one should not resort to beating without need. Qur'an recitation can be harder on the jinn than blows — especially the verses (ayat) about punishment, fire, injustice, and the fate of the wrongdoers.
Evidence — where gentleness is found
إِنَّ الرِّفْقَ لَا يَكُونُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلَّا زَانَهُ، وَلَا يُنْزَعُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا شَانَهُ
Indeed, gentleness is not found in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it makes it ugly. (Sahih Muslim 2594)
The Shaykh's greatest warning — one person after another goes and says "You have a jinn", until in the end the person's mental state itself worsens. Those very words make him even sicker.
What to do
- No beating without need; even when it is absolutely necessary, keep it light, on the hands and feet.
- The patient is fully unconscious and feels nothing — Ibn Taymiyyah and Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on them, did it only in such a state.
- It is not a jinn just because someone says "I am a jinn" — the subconscious mind also speaks; telling them apart takes experience.
- Do not go around telling anyone "You are possessed" — those very words increase the suffering.

Breaking Sihr Is Not That Difficult
The question came to Sheikh Wahid Abdussalam Bali from a weary husband. The answer is so simple that many people at first do not even want to believe it.
What to Do Yourself When Struck by the Evil Eye
Here Shaykh Bali has set out two separate steps — one is treatment, the other is protection. It is by mixing these two up that people grow weary year after year.
What the Shaykh Himself Gave Up
Shaykh Bali himself returned from three well-known practices of ruqyah — yet he did not blame those who do them. This is exactly where the etiquette lies.
