Ruqyah means seeking shifa from Allah by reciting verses of the Qur'an and the duas narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is a treatment method free from shirk and entirely in accordance with the Shariah — and most importantly, it is not obligatory to go to anyone for it. You can perform your own ruqyah yourself.

Is it permissible to perform ruqyah?

There are three conditions; if they are met, ruqyah is undoubtedly permissible:

  1. It must be done by reciting verses of the Qur'an, the names and attributes of Allah, or duas narrated in authentic hadith.
  2. It must be recited in Arabic or in a language whose meaning is understood.
  3. You must believe that ruqyah does nothing by itself — only Allah grants shifa.

Going beyond this — unclear words, number-based amulets, seeking help from the jinn, or regarding the raqi as superhuman — these are exactly what exceeds the limits, and in some cases are shirk.

How to Do Self-Ruqyah

Step 1 — Preparation

  • Make wudu and sit in a clean place
  • Keep firm belief in your heart that shifa is in Allah's hand
  • If there are pictures, music, or other means of sin in the house, remove them

Step 2 — What to Recite

  • Surah Al-Fatihah
  • Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255)
  • The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas — three times each

Depending on the problem, the verses for sihr (magic), the evil eye, or the jinn are also added.

Step 3 — How to Apply It

  • On yourself: Recite, blow lightly into both hands, and wipe them over your whole body
  • On water: Recite, blow lightly into the water, drink that water and bathe with it
  • On oil or honey: Recite, blow lightly, and use it

Step 4 — Consistency

This is the most important step, and this is where most people stop. Continue regularly for at least two to three weeks up to one month. Do not become discouraged if you do not see results in a single day.

Along with ruqyah, keep up the five daily prayers on time and the morning and evening adhkar. The observation of experienced raqis is that without these two, the results of ruqyah are slow.

When to Go to a Raqi

If the symptoms do not lessen even after you try by yourself, or you cannot understand what exactly the problem is — then you may seek the advice of an experienced and religiously committed raqi. But remember, the raqi is only a means.

For serious physical or mental symptoms, definitely consult a qualified doctor. Ruqyah is not a substitute for necessary treatment, but a complement.
