Where Barakah Lies in Business

Shaykh Bali says — barakah lies in speaking the truth and making defects clear. If they are concealed, the barakah of that sale is erased.

Familiar Scenes

There is a problem with the car, and the seller knows it. When the buyer asks, he is told — I don't know, brother, have a look yourself.

The packet says one kilo. When weighed, it is 950 grams, sometimes 970. It's only a little, after all — that is how it is accepted.

The label names a country whose goods people like; it was made somewhere else. No one even asks.

The sale is done, the money comes into your hand. Yet the question remains — did the barakah come along with it?

The Shaykh's Answer

The Prophet ﷺ said — if both parties speak the truth and make things clear, barakah is granted in their sale; if they lie and conceal, the barakah is erased.

The Shaykh says the seller must tell the defects of the goods. If he knows, it is not permissible to say "I don't know." If it is a car, let the buyer have a mechanic examine it; if it is a house, an engineer or a contractor.

And until they part from the gathering, both have the option to go back; once they have parted, no more — unless the sale was made on the condition of a fixed number of days. Even if the agreement was verbal, it must be fulfilled, whether the price rises or falls.

The Evidence — Where Barakah Is Written

الْبَيِّعَانِ بِالْخِيَارِ مَا لَمْ يَتَفَرَّقَا، فَإِنْ صَدَقَا وَبَيَّنَا بُورِكَ لَهُمَا فِي بَيْعِهِمَا، وَإِنْ كَذَبَا وَكَتَمَا مُحِقَتْ بَرَكَةُ بَيْعِهِمَا

Both the buyer and the seller have the right to change their decision until they part. If they speak the truth and make things clear, barakah is granted in their sale; and if they lie and conceal, the barakah of their sale is erased. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)Copy

Allah has announced destruction for those who give short measure — Surah Al-Mutaffifin, verses 1–3. The Shaykh says, giving 950 grams in a one-kilo packet also falls within this.

What to Do

1. Tell the buyer every defect of the goods — if you know, do not say "I don't know."
2. Keep labels, weights and measurements accurate — if you write one kilo, give one kilo.
3. A verbal agreement is also an agreement — keep your word even if the price goes up or down.
4. Whether something sells or not is Allah's decree — it is no excuse to abandon honesty.
