Sadaqah Does Not Decrease Wealth

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali says — on the day you give sadaqah, an angel will descend from the heavens and make dua for you alone.

How the Hesitation Comes

The money is in your hand, and the person is right in front of you. Yet a calculation keeps running inside — if I give now, will I still manage for the rest of the days this month?

So the giving gets delayed. I think, let me get things in order first; then I will give properly, all at once. That "later" never comes.

Others, on the other hand, think — I am struggling myself; sadaqah is for the wealthy. In this way the door is closed by one's own hand.

Shaykh Bali touched exactly this spot — and he began the matter from the complete opposite direction.

The Shaykh's Answer

Beware — never think, even by mistake, that sadaqah reduces your wealth. The Prophet ﷺ said, sadaqah has never decreased any wealth.

The Shaykh says, fix one sadaqah for every day — however small it may be. If you can place it in the hand of someone in need, give it; if you cannot, keep a box at home and put something in it every day. And do not wait for the savings to be complete; take it out and give it midway.

Correct your intention as well — you are not giving from your own wealth, you are giving from the wealth that Allah Himself gave. And you are not doing a favour to the person in need; you need that reward more than he does.

Evidence — Who Instills the Fear of Poverty

Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allāh promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (Surah Al-Baqara 2:268 — Saheeh International)

مَا نَقَصَتْ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ مَالٍ

Sadaqah has never decreased any wealth. (Sahih Muslim 2588)

What to Do

  1. Fix one sadaqah for every day — however small it may be; consistency is what matters most.
  2. Keep a sadaqah box at home; do not wait until it has filled up completely — take it out and give it midway.
  3. Correct your intention — I am giving from the wealth Allah gave me, and I am only making my own scale heavier.
  4. Make your child accustomed to it — put something in their hand and say, go, give this as sadaqah.
