Let your daughter's name be a piece of history

Shaykh Bali gave just one criterion for choosing a name — a name with a history behind it, which she herself will be able to read about when she grows up.

How the question comes

A brother has been blessed with a newborn daughter. He asked the Shaykh for two things — a dua for the girl, and a name.

The Shaykh first made dua — that Allah grant her barakah, make her righteous, pure and blessed, include her among the righteous, devout and believing women, and grant her a righteous husband and blessed children.

This dua was not only for that girl — the Shaykh made dua for all our sons and daughters, for all the children of the Muslims.

Then came the matter of the name. And there he stated a wonderful principle.

The Shaykh's answer

Choose an Islamic name with a history behind it — let the name itself be her teacher.

If you name her Fatimah — when she grows up, tell her: you are named after Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ; the Prophet ﷺ said that she is the leader of the women of Paradise. Now go and read her seerah.

If you name her Khadijah — tell her: she was the first to believe in the Prophet ﷺ and to confirm his truthfulness; Allah Himself sent her salaam. Names like Zaynab and Maymunah are also blessed.

Evidence — the glad tidings for Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her)

بَشِّرْهَا بِبَيْتٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ مِنْ قَصَبٍ، لَا صَخَبَ فِيهِ وَلَا نَصَبَ

Give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of pearl, where there is no noise and no weariness. (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)Copy

Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said: Khadijah is about to arrive with food; convey to her greetings of peace from her Lord. Behind every such name stands a whole life.

What to do

1. When a child is born, first make a dua for barakah — a dua to be righteous and pure.
2. Give a name that has history behind it — Fatimah, Khadijah, Zaynab, Maymunah.
3. When she grows up, tell her why you chose this name, then give her the seerah of that woman to read.
4. Let the name not be meaningless or unpleasant — a name grows up together with the child.
