Where Should You Educate Your Child?

Sheikh Wahid Bali asked the parents of his own country to choose one particular path — and he gave three clear criteria as the reason.
Three Differences
Sheikh Bali advised Muslim parents in Egypt: educate your child in the Al-Azhar system. The reason lies in three areas.
One — in an ordinary school, religious education means a book of a few pages, which is not even added to the total marks. In other words, the message becomes: there is no need to study this.
Two — there, memorizing a set portion of the Qur'an every year is compulsory; the connection with the Qur'an lasts all the way to university.
Three — from primary school to university, boys and girls have separate arrangements; this keeps the years of adolescence largely safe.
The Sheikh's Answer
The decision is not only about good results — the real question is the child's connection with the Qur'an and the environment around them.
The Sheikh also gave a warning. Where ta'wil is taught in explaining the attributes of Allah — for example, that "the Hand of Allah" means only power — there, explain the correct understanding to your child at home.
Say: we believe in the attributes of Allah in a manner befitting His majesty; we do not know their nature or manner, and we do not compare them with the creation. Because there is nothing like Him.
Evidence — The Responsibility of Protecting the Family
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًۭا
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded. (Surah At-Tahrim 66:6 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
When Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about istiwa, he said — "Istiwa is known, its manner is unknown, and believing in it is obligatory." Teach your child exactly this balance.
What to Do
- Before choosing a school, check whether religious education is truly taught there.
- Your child's connection with the Qur'an should grow every year — this is the main criterion.
- Look at the environment — especially whether there are separate arrangements during the years of adolescence.
- Whatever is taught wrongly at school, correct it gently at home — without blaming the child.
