Lowering the gaze saves the heart
Shaykh Bali was struck by the verse — Allah did not say, "Tell the transgressors," or "Tell the sinners"; He said "Tell the believers to lower their gaze."

Shaykh Bali was struck by the verse — Allah did not say, "Tell the transgressors," or "Tell the sinners"; He said "Tell the believers to lower their gaze."
Where the problem lies
On the road, on the bus, in the office — the eyes fall on things. And once the phone is in your hand, there is no stopping it; thinking no one is watching, your fingers keep scrolling.
Shaykh Bali says — our two eyes are a blessing from Allah. Only the one who has lost them understands their worth. And for the one who is patient, in the words of the Prophet ﷺ, Allah gives Paradise in return.
Then why did He give us eyes? The Shaykh's answer — to look at what is beneficial and act on it, and to see what is harmful and avoid it.
There are many excuses — "My glance is innocent," "I am a teacher, I have to look." This is where the Shaykh's words are straightforward.
The Shaykh's answer
Allah told the believers to lower their gaze — those whose faith is strong. Then what of the condition of those whose faith is weak? (Surah An-Nur, verse 30)
The Shaykh says the ruling is the same for women too. If your eyes fall on something suddenly, turn them away at once — the Prophet ﷺ told Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), "The first is for you, the second is not for you" (Sahih Muslim).
And what if the nafs wants to win? The Shaykh's advice — recite Ayat al-Kursi in a loud voice, make dhikr of Allah aloud; your faith will grow strong and you will move away from the haram.
Evidence — the eyes will also be accounted for
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned. (Surah Al-Israa 17:36 — Saheeh International)
The Shaykh says — whoever thinks no one is watching is forgetting: Allah is watching, and two angels are writing. An intentional glance is recorded as a sin, which is erased only by repentance and istighfar (seeking forgiveness).
What to do
- If your eyes fall on something suddenly, turn them away at once — the first is forgiven, the second is not.
- Turn your eyes away from haram pictures and videos on your phone — the ruling is the same for the real world and the screen.
- When the nafs pulls you, recite Ayat al-Kursi loudly and make dhikr aloud.
- Whenever waswasa (whispers) come, say — "Astaghfirullah," "Subhanallah"; Shaytan will gradually withdraw.
