Shaykh Bali has worked out a calculation to show what just one minute a day spent on tasbih adds up to over a whole lifetime.

A Strange Scene

A gentleman — his eyes see, his ears hear, his mouth speaks, his mind thinks. Yet he stands with pieces of gold and jewels in his hands.

Each piece is worth ten thousand. He is selling it for one taka. Some pieces he simply throws away, without even looking back.

Do you know who this man is? The Shaykh says — It is you. Every moment of life is one of those pieces of jewel, with which countless good deeds could have been bought.

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say — every dawn calls out: O son of Adam, I am a new day, a witness to your deeds; make use of me, for I will not return.

The Shaykh's Calculation

In a minute there are about 60 tasbihs. If one good deed is multiplied tenfold, then in a single minute that is 600 good deeds.

Just one minute a day — 18 thousand good deeds a month, 2 lakh 19 thousand a year. Continuing like this for 50 years comes to about 1 crore 9 lakh 50 thousand. And this is only the calculation for one minute.

A human being is a traveler in this world — the first stage is the cradle, the last stage is the grave. Lifespan is the road, the days are the stages, the breaths are the steps, and time itself is the capital.

The Evidence — The Two Blessings in Which People Are Deceived

نِعْمَتَانِ مَغْبُونٌ فِيهِمَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ: الصِّحَّةُ وَالْفَرَاغُ

There are two blessings in which many people are deceived — health and free time. (Sahih Bukhari 6412)

The Shaykh says, the maghbun is the merchant who sells a valuable thing cheaply. One of the Salaf would move his lips in dhikr even while trimming his pen — so that not even a single moment would be wasted.

A Daily Schedule for the Ordinary Muslim

  1. Wake up half an hour before Fajr; pray some salah, even if only with short surahs.
  2. Fajr in congregation; then dhikr and recitation until sunrise, then two rak'ahs.
  3. Go out to your work — but pray the obligatory prayers in congregation, and hold on to the sunnah prayers as well.
  4. Keep your tongue busy with dhikr between tasks; before sleeping, pray four rak'ahs and sleep in a state of purity.
