Shaykh Bali says — keeping family ties, being good to your mother and father, and sadaqah (charity). All three are clear in the hadith.
Where the Question Gets Stuck
The hadith says that keeping family ties increases provision and lengthens life. The moment you hear this, a question comes to mind.
Because the Qur'an says — when their appointed time comes, they cannot delay it or advance it by even a moment. So how can life be lengthened?
In reply, Shaykh Bali speaks of two levels of decree — one final, the other suspended.
What is written in the Preserved Tablet does not change; but what is with the angel in charge of lifespan is subject to erasing and writing.
The Shaykh's Answer
Verse 39 of Surah Ar-Ra'd — Allah erases what He wills and keeps what He wills; and with Him is the Mother of the Book.
Relatives means all relatives, near and far. Keeping ties is done in two ways — materially: checking on them, visiting them, giving hadiya (gifts), and giving sadaqah (charity) if they are in need. And emotionally: making dua for them, wishing them well, and stepping forward when they need you.
The Evidence — Hadith on Provision and Lifespan
مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُبْسَطَ لَهُ فِي رِزْقِهِ، وَيُنْسَأَ لَهُ فِي أَثَرِهِ، فَلْيَصِلْ رَحِمَهُ
Whoever wishes to have his provision expanded and his life lengthened should maintain the ties of kinship. (Sahih Bukhari 2067, Sahih Muslim 2557)
It is reported in a hasan hadith in Tirmidhi — nothing turns back the qadar (divine decree) except dua, and nothing increases lifespan except good conduct (Sunan at-Tirmidhi). Scholars differ over the grading of the narration "Secret sadaqah (charity) prevents a bad death."
What to Do
- Call your mother and father today — ask how their health is, how they are feeling; make it a daily habit.
- When your mother sits down to tell a story, listen attentively, even if the story is not useful to you.
- Check on your relatives, near and far — visits, hadiya (gifts), and dua.
- Give sadaqah (charity) every day, even if it is small — sadaqah extinguishes sins.
