Whom does Allah come to love?

Shaykh Bali says that these are the nafl acts — and in this discussion he has chosen the nafl salah, because the status of salah is distinct.

The scene, for example

I am praying the obligatory prayers — but it feels as if the relationship is only one of accounting, not of love.

I hear that Allah loves some people. A question arises in my heart — where is that door?

The days pass in busyness. Even when I remember the nafl, I never manage to begin.

Shaykh Bali has pointed out the door here — with a sentence from a hadith qudsi.

The Shaykh's answer

‘My servant keeps drawing near to Me with nafl acts, until I come to love him’ — hadith qudsi.

Nafl does not mean only prayer — the sunnah rawatib and nafl prayers, qiyam in Ramadan, fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, and sadaqah (charity) beyond the obligatory zakah; all of these are included in nafl.

If you hold on to twelve rak'ahs of sunnah rawatib every day, there is a house in Jannah: two before Fajr, four before Dhuhr and two after, two after Maghrib, two after Isha. If the four before Dhuhr are missed, they can be prayed afterwards.

Evidence — the door of nafl

وَلَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ

My servant keeps drawing near to Me through nafl worship, until I come to love him. (Sahih Bukhari 6502)Copy

A Companion asked for the Prophet's ﷺ company in Jannah; he said — help me with regard to yourself by prostrating a lot. (Sahih Muslim 489)

What to do

1. Hold on to twelve rak'ahs of sunnah rawatib every day.
2. Begin the Duha prayer — even if with just two rak'ahs.
3. Perform qiyam for a while at night, when people are asleep.
4. Add fasting on Mondays and Thursdays and regular sadaqah (charity).
