Can a khatm be recited and its reward gifted to the deceased?
Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali lays out the evidence here in full — exactly six deeds reach the deceased, and they are all specified in the hadith.

Shaykh Wahid Abdus Salam Bali lays out the evidence here in full — exactly six deeds reach the deceased, and they are all specified in the hadith.
How the question comes up
Someone in the house has passed away. In the midst of grief, someone says — come, let us all complete a khatm together.
The juz are divided up, and it is decided who will recite which. When the recitation is finished, it is said — we gift the reward of this recitation to the deceased.
The one doing it is doing it out of love. Still, a question remains inside — is this really reaching him?
This very question was put before Shaykh Bali — and he answered by going through the evidence point by point.
The Shaykh's answer
When a servant dies, his deeds come to an end — after that, only as much reaches him as the evidence testifies to.
The six deeds proven by the evidence: dua for the deceased, sadaqah, Hajj on his behalf, Umrah, a guardian fasting on his behalf if fasts remain owing, and the repayment of his debt. There is an authentic hadith for each one of them.
But what about the reward of recitation reaching him? The Prophet ﷺ did not say such a thing, nor did he do it himself; the Companions did not do it either. The scholars differ, but the preferred view according to the Shaykh is — the reward of recitation does not reach the deceased.
The evidence — the three that continue
When a person dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three — ongoing sadaqah, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who makes dua for him. (Sahih Muslim 1631)
A woman came and said, my father has passed away. The Prophet ﷺ said — Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father. The incident of Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding debt is in Sahih Bukhari.
What to do
- Make dua for your parents every day — this is the surest way.
- Set up ongoing sadaqah in their name — providing water, books, knowledge, or any lasting good.
- If there is a debt, repay it; if fasts remain owing, let a guardian keep them.
- In a matter on which scholars differ, do not blame anyone — take the path of the evidence yourself.
