Give the fitrah in front of your children's eyes
Shaykh Bali says — there is no harm in giving it the other way. But at least once in your life, do it with your own hands; the picture will stay etched in your child's mind for life.
In this article
Shaykh Bali says — there is no harm in giving it the other way. But at least once in your life, do it with your own hands; the picture will stay etched in your child's mind for life.
How the scene usually goes
Toward the end of Ramadan, the father calculates — how many people are in the house, and how much one sa' costs. Then he hands the money to the imam of the mosque and tells him to buy food and distribute it.
Returning home, he tells the children — your fitrah has been paid. That's all, nothing more.
Nothing caught the child's eye. Growing up, he does not even know what the fitrah is made of or how much it is.
The Shaykh says — there is no harm in this; but a beautiful opportunity slips away.
The Shaykh's reply
At least once in your life, measure out the fitrah at home, together with your family, with your own hands.
The Shaykh's description — buy rice. Call your wife and children. Measure one sa' (about two and a half kilos in the example he gave) and say, this is my fitrah. Then let each person measure their own fitrah.
You measure out the little ones' share for them. Then give the total to the children and send them to a neighbor or a poor person. This very scene gets painted into their minds.
Evidence — protecting the people of the household
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded. (Surah At-Tahrim 66:6 — Saheeh International; meaning of the complete verse)
The Shaykh says — the reward of this deed keeps reaching you even in the grave. When your child grows up, he will tell his own children, my father used to do this with us.
What to do
- This time, buy the fitrah food yourself — and give it at home.
- Call your family; let each person measure their own fitrah with their own hands.
- Measure out the young children's share yourself, right in front of their eyes.
- Put it all together and send it to a poor neighbor's house through the children's hands.
