Whoever Deceives Is Not From Me

Shaykh Bali says that a sick heart has made this crime seem so small that it is passed off as generosity and cleverness.

Shaykh Bali says that a sick heart has made this crime seem so small that it is passed off as generosity and cleverness.

The Familiar Faces of Deception

  • Selling expired products with a new date stamped on them
  • The packet says one kilo, but there is less inside
  • Making goods in another country and putting the name of a famous country on them
  • Using hormones on fruits and vegetables to increase their size and color
  • A contractor supplying less steel rod and cement than the contract specifies
  • Holding back a cow's milk to sell it so that it looks like there is more milk
  • False testimony, cheating in exams, getting someone else to write your thesis

And above all other excuses there is one shield: everyone does it.

The Shaykh's Reply

Deception means mixing bad with good and presenting it in the form of good.

One day the Prophet ﷺ put his hand into a heap of grain in the market and found the bottom of it wet. The seller said, "It got wet in the rain." He said — "Then why did you not put the wet part on top, so that people could see it? Whoever deceives is not one of us."

"Everyone does it" — the Shaykh's reply: If people do good, do good; if they do bad, stay away from their bad. On the Day of Judgment you will stand alone, not with a group of businessmen.

The Evidence — The Declaration of the Prophet ﷺ

مَنْ غَشَّ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي

Whoever deceives is not one of us. (Sahih Muslim 102)

The Shaykh says — cheating a non-Muslim is haram in exactly the same way. And in the Qur'an Allah has said: woe to those who give less in measure; do they not think that they will be raised on a Great Day? (Surah Al-Mutaffifin, verses 1–4)

What to Do

  1. Remember — Allah is watching you, even at the very moment of deceiving.
  2. Those who are harmed by your deception will be your opponents on the Day of Judgment.
  3. State the weight, expiry date and source clearly; if there is any fault, say it out loud.
  4. If you have deceived before, repent today — repentance wipes away all that came before.
