Ruqyah Protocol
Sunnah Duas and Amal (Practices) for Sleep
Sunnah amal before and after sleep, and protection from night fears and nightmares

Introduction — who this protocol is for
The Sunnah amal (practices) before and after sleep are an important part of ruqyah treatment. If you do them regularly, by Allah's mercy you can be freed from the evil whispers of Shaytan (Satan), fear during sleep, nightmares and sleeplessness. Making wudu before sleeping and lying on your right side are the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Recite each amal calmly, with full focus and understanding its meaning. Do not settle for recitation from memory alone; it is essential to recite with trust.
Signs for which this protocol may help
- You want protection from the evil promptings and waswasa (whispers) of Shaytan before sleeping every night
- You wake up again and again from fear, panic or nightmares during sleep
- You feel afraid or lonely sleeping alone
- You take a long time to fall asleep or your sleep is restless at night (a tendency towards insomnia)
- You want to keep up the daily sleep amal regularly according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
Important note: Most of the signs above can also have ordinary physical or psychological causes. So first get the necessary medical tests and treatment. Ruqyah runs alongside medical treatment, not as a replacement for it. Do not conclude with certainty that someone is affected by sihr or jinn just because a sign matches.
Translation of the meanings of the Qur'an: Saheeh International (via quran.com).
Opening duas
Make wudu and sit facing the qiblah. Make the intention: through the Word of Allah, I am asking Allah alone for healing.
I begin in the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the heavens or on the earth can cause harm; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Recite: 3 times
Nothing can cause sudden harm to the one who recites this dua in the morning and evening. (Tirmidhi 3388)
In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Meaning: Surah Al-Faatiha 1:1, Saheeh International.
Recite: 19 times
Before starting the ruqyah, settle your focus and your intention, then recite.
I seek refuge in the perfect Words of Allah from the evil of all that He has created.
Recite: 3 times
(Muslim 2708)
Recitation of Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk before sleep
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to recite these two Surahs every night before sleeping. If you have time, recite them by reading or from memory; even when you are short of time, do not leave out this amal, and try to recite at least a short portion.

Alif, Lām, Meem. [This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds. Or do they say, "He invented it"? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord, [O Muḥammad], that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you [so] perhaps they will be guided. It is Allāh who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days; then He established Himself above the Throne. You have not besides Him any protector or any intercessor; so will you not be reminded? He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count. That is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Exalted in Might, the Merciful, Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained. Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful. And they say, "When we are lost [i.e., disintegrated] within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers. Say, "The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you. Then to your Lord you will be returned." If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain." And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together. So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do." Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant. Their sides part [i.e., they arise] from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes [i.e., satisfaction] as reward for what they used to do. Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal. As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do. But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny." And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return [i.e., repent]. And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution. And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And We made it [i.e., the Torah] guidance for the Children of Israel. And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ. Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear? Have they not seen that We drive water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see? And they say, "When will be this conquest, if you should be truthful?" Say, [O Muḥammad], "On the Day of Conquest the belief of those who had disbelieved will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved." So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.

Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent - [He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving - [And] who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks? Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued. And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze. And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination. When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up. It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?" They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'" And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze." And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze. Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward. And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware? It is He who made the earth tame for you - so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision - and to Him is the resurrection. Do you feel secure that He who is above would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway? Or do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning. And already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach. Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing. Or who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers are not but in delusion. Or who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision? But they have persisted in insolence and aversion. Then is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path? Say, "It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful." Say, "It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered." And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?" Say, "The knowledge is only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner." But when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call." Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered: whether Allāh should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?" Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error." Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"

O my Lord! In Your name I have laid down my side (on the bed), and in Your name I will raise it. If You take my soul (while I sleep), then have mercy on it. And if You return it, then protect it, just as You protect Your righteous servants.
Recite: 1 time every night
The source marks this as the main/core dua for sleep
O Allah, indeed You created my soul and You will take it; its death and its life are in Your hands. If You keep it alive, then protect it, and if You cause it to die, then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being ('afiyah).
Recite: 1 time every night
Dua for my well-being: the source had no specific count badge

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Injil and the Furqan! I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose control is in Your hand. O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You; You are the Last, there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest, there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, there is nothing hidden from You. Settle our debts for us and free us from poverty.
Recite: 1 time every night
Dua to the Lord of the heavens and the earth: the source had no count badge
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the evil promptings of the devils and from their presence.
Recite: Can be recited as needed
To recite if you feel afraid or lonely during sleep
O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, entrusted all my affairs to You, turned my face towards You, and leaned my reliance upon You, with hope and with fear, towards You alone. There is no refuge and no place of safety except with You. I believe in the Book You have sent down, and I believe in the Prophet You have sent.
Recite: 1 time, as the very last thing before sleeping
It has come in a hadith that whoever recites this and dies in their sleep that night dies upon the fitrah (Islam), so it is best to recite it last of all
All praise is for Allah, who gave us life again after causing us to die (sleep), and to Him is the resurrection.
Recite: 1 time after waking up
The Sunnah dua upon waking up
Closing surahs and duas
End every session this way. At the end, blow into water and drink it.

The Prophet ﷺ used to recite this dua over Hasan and Husain (may Allah be pleased with them). (Bukhari 3371)

Jibril (peace be upon him) performed ruqyah over the Prophet ﷺ in this way. (Muslim 2186)
O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove the hardship and grant healing. You are the Healer; there is no healing except Your healing — a healing that leaves no illness behind.
Recite: 7 times
(Bukhari 5743)
📌 Self-ruqyah guideline
Consistency is the key. A little every day, but regularly.
Method — step by step
- Make wudu, then sit somewhere quiet facing the qiblah. Keep your phone away.
- Make the intention: I am asking Allah for healing through the Words of Allah; the Words have no power of their own — the power belongs to Allah.
- Recite the opening duas (Chapter 1).
- Then recite the verses (ayahs) in order. While reciting, blow lightly into both palms and pass your hands over the affected area.
- Recite each verse as many times as stated in the instruction box below it — there is no need to do more or less.
- In between, make dua wholeheartedly in your own language for 15 minutes. If tears come, do not hold them back.
- At the end, recite the closing surahs and duas, then blow lightly into the water.
- Continue every day for at least 40 days. If you miss some days, do not lose heart — simply start again.
Daily schedule
| Morning | After Fajr — verse recitation, 15 minutes |
| Evening | After Maghrib — verse recitation, 15 minutes |
| Night | Before sleeping — closing surahs and duas, drink recited-over water |
| Weekly | One ruqyah bath a week |
Your own dua in your own language (15 minutes)
During or after the recitation of the verses, ask Allah in your own language. Below is a sample — you do not have to read exactly this; say it in your own words.
O Allah, make my sleep a peaceful sleep. Protect me from nightmares, night fears and the evil promptings of Shaytan. And if my death comes in this very sleep, then let me die upon iman.
Where to massage the recited-over oil
Focus for Sunnah Duas and Amal (Practices) for Sleep: This amal is done through dua and recitation; there is no need to use oil
Supplements and weekly practices
| Recited-over water | Recite the ruqyah verses over a bottle of water and blow into it. Drink it 3 times a day: in the morning on an empty stomach, at midday, and at night before sleeping. |
| Recited-over honey | Blow into pure honey and take one spoonful every morning. It is good to recite verse 69 of Surah An-Nahl and then blow into it. |
| Recited-over olive oil | Recite the verses over olive oil, blow into it, and massage it into the affected area. It is best done at night before sleeping. |
| Black seed (nigella) | Every morning, take 7 black seeds with recited-over honey. The Prophet ﷺ said that black seed contains a cure for every disease except death. (Bukhari 5688) |
| Ruqyah bath | Recite the verses over a bucket of water and blow into it. You may also mix in seven crushed jujube leaves. Pour the water over yourself from the head down and bathe, once a week. |
| Spraying the home | Put recited-over water in a spray bottle and spray it in the corners of the house, on the doors and windows, and under the bed. |
Daily practices (amal)
Alongside ruqyah, it is these practices that give long-term protection.
| After Fajr | Surah Yasin 1 time |
| Morning and evening | The morning and evening adhkar from Hisnul Muslim, regularly |
| After Asr | Surah Al-Waqi'ah 1 time |
| At night | Surah Qaf 3 times, Surah Al-Mulk 1 time |
| Before sleeping | Ayat al-Kursi 1 time, the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and the three Quls 3 times each. Blow into your hands and wipe them over your whole body. |
| Every day | Give sadaqah as much as you can, every day, even if only a little. Sadaqah wards off calamity. |
| Every day | The obligatory salah in congregation, istighfar 100 times, salawat upon the Prophet 100 times |
Ruqyah is a Shariah-based method of treatment; it is not a substitute for necessary medical treatment.
