Increasing a Mother's Breast Milk — Surah Yasin

For which problem: the milk drying up, the baby staying hungry

Method

1. In a state of wudu, write Surah Yasin with saffron on a porcelain plate or on paper.
2. Dissolve it in water and give it to the mother to drink.

The raqi's note

This method says to write verses (ayahs) of the Qur'an, wash them off or dissolve them, and drink. A group of scholars, including Imam Ibn al-Qayyim and Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, have said it is permissible (because here one drinks with the intention of barakah, and what is written is the very word of Allah). Another group of scholars have called it disliked — because this practice is not established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or from the Companions, and there is a fear that washing off the writing of the Qur'an involves disrespect to the Word.

The real risk is not in the method but in the belief: if someone thinks that paper, ink or water has power of its own, that is an error in creed. Only Allah gives shifa; the verses are merely a means.

Know this from a medical point of view: the most common causes of low milk supply are the baby nursing too little, the mother being dehydrated (lacking water), lack of sleep and stress. The more the baby is fed, the more milk is produced — this is the arrangement Allah has set. Seek the advice of a lactation consultant or a health worker.

A safe alternative

• With the same intention, recite the Surah directly over water and blow over it, then drink it — this matches directly the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in performing ruqyah by blowing, and there is no difference of opinion about it.
